Religion Views

By Parman Johnson

The results to my belief-o-meter test were very surprising to me. According to my results, the religion most appropriate for my beliefs is Unitarian Universalism, which is a religion that accepts almost all beliefs regardless. Liberal Quaker and Judaism follow with almost the same percentages. There are some concepts from these two religions that may relate to my beliefs, but I have my own way of life.

It is a simple equation that makes me a happy, spiritual, and faithful person: Do not do harm! I was born into Islam, which was the sixteenth religion on my result list. Even though I was raised in a Muslim country where no one has the freedom of religion, I do not believe in one “supreme” religion over the other. I believe that I am spiritual in that I respect all beliefs, God’s, and Goddesses. Even though I respect and acknowledge other beliefs, I have my own higher power to pray to. I do believe in God, and pray almost every night; however, my God is something I have never seen or read described before. My God is a higher power who wants humans to be kind, and to be good individuals. Ever since I have been a child my parents have toughed me to be a good person.

No set guidelines were set for my behavior to follow, but I was told to trust my instincts and my morals when it comes to my actions. I believe in karma, not specifically in the sense of reincarnation, but in the sense of being good to receive good in life. “What goes around comes around” has been a saying that has affected my behavior, actions, and even personality in positive ways. I was surprised to listen to my classmates discuss their religions, and only one person mentioned Karma. Only Freddie seemed to agree with me on the concept of Karma.

Discriminating against someone’s religion is basically telling that person that their way of is wrong; that everything that they have been taught, everything that they have done, and all that they were planning on doing is “wrong”. This is similar to discriminating against a blind person. If someone can not “see” life the way you see life, it doesn’t mean that their view is wrong, or inferior to yours. That is why the greatest wars and disagreements in world history were over religion. Making one religion seem inferior to another one is discrimination against someone’s life, not just beliefs. We have been talking in class and reading articles on what makes all of us different, and how to view those differences. The article by Audre Lorde describes many views on discrimination, and on how women of ethnicity are treated who comes from a low socioeconomic status. Discriminating against someone because of their religion is just as hurtful and ignorant as discriminating against them because of their sex, age, race, gender, disability, and sexual orientation.

These results will not affect anything in my life since I have grown to love my spirituality and my God. My professional and personal life will always go by my philosophy of being a good person, and that may seem simple, but it helps me go to sleep at night.
